Literary Translation

Literary and academic translation is a different discipline from legal or technical translation. There is no single correct answer: a legal contract has a specific meaning that must be precisely rendered. A poem has an intended effect that must be achieved through different means in the target language. sh-translation works with translators who are themselves writers. We look for published translators, working academics, and literary professionals with demonstrated sensibility in the target language. For academic work, we work with translators who have subject-matter expertise in the relevant academic discipline and understand both the research context and the publication conventions of the target language environment. For literary work, we present the author with translated samples before committing to a full project, allowing them to assess voice and tone before work proceeds.
